Russia Aims to Increase Its Automobile Presence in Ethiopia

After the successful delivery of a batch of tractors produced in Russia, automakers UAZ and AvtoVAZ are looking to expand their presence in Ethiopia, with plans that may include local vehicle assembly operations.

The Russian Embassy in Ethiopia announced on social media this week that Russian automotive companies are actively exploring opportunities to enter the Ethiopian market. Referring to an interview between Ambassador Evgeny Terekhin and the TASS news agency, the embassy identified UAZ and AvtoVAZ as being in discussions to evaluate Ethiopia’s business and investment environment.

According to the embassy’s statement, both companies are carrying out a comprehensive market assessment, studying factors such as business conditions, relevant legislation, investment prospects, and overall commercial opportunities. “The process includes detailed marketing and technical research to confirm the economic feasibility of the projects,” the post quoted Ambassador Terekhin as saying.

The Ambassador added that official negotiations between the two countries are in progress, emphasizing that the automotive industry is among the most promising sectors for future bilateral economic cooperation.

“We expect that these efforts will enable Russian cars to gain a solid position on Ethiopian roads,” Terekhin stated.

The announcement also highlighted the strong potential of the Ethiopian market to attract Russian manufacturers, citing the recent delivery of tractors by Lada Export as an example of early collaboration.

Terekhin further revealed that mutual trade between Russia and Ethiopia more than doubled to USD 191 million in the first half of 2025, underlining that economic partnership remains a top priority for both nations.

“This growth demonstrates the high level of mutual interest between businesses in both countries,” he said. “We also see significant potential for increasing Ethiopian exports of coffee, flowers, oil seeds, and legumes to the Russian market.”

Meanwhile, during a meeting in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that relations between Russia and Ethiopia are undergoing “successful and steady development” following his talks with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos.

Lavrov affirmed that both sides are committed to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, stating, “We have agreed to reinvigorate the work and make better use of the potential of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation and Trade.”
