German carmaker VW to resume production in Kenya
Volkswagen, a German automaker, has declared that it will start making automobiles again in Kenya by the end of this year.
The South African Volkswagen Group announced plans to expand its passenger car assembly business in Kenya.
By the end of 2024, the automobile manufacturer plans to collaborate with a regional automaker to increase sales throughout Eastern Africa.
In response to market needs, VW South Africa announced that it would increase manufacture of five additional models in partnership with local automaker Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers (KVM), of which CFAO is a significant shareholder.
Martina Biene, the chief executive of Volkswagen South Africa, stated that the company, which is the largest automobile manufacturer in the world by volume, has faith in Kenya's ability to establish "a very big fully-fledged" automotive industry.
VWGA will establish Kenya as the East Africa Hub, demonstrating the potential of the East African Community. We will increase our investment in the area and gradually transition from ICE, hybrid, and electric vehicles to passenger cars," she stated.
Martina said that VW will make investments in recycling, job training, and localization. "The company will ensure that they are growing sustainable supply chain enterprises and create green jobs," she added.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said, "I am happy to welcome back the Volkswagen Group, currently the largest car manufacturer in the world, back to Kenya," following a meeting with VW officials in Nairobi.
According to Mudavadi, Kenya is eager to industrialize as a nation and recognizes the contribution automakers make to the implementation of an industrialization plan.
Less than a year after VW established operations in Kenya in 2016, the company's first vehicle drove off the ramp. According to data from the Kenya Motor Industry Association (KMI), it has sold 104 units since its launch.
It will join companies like Isuzu, Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi that are already present in Kenya.
