Kenyan President Launches Toyota Fortuner Assembly Plant in Mombasa
CFAO Motors, Kenya's largest automotive distributor and service provider, has launched the first locally assembled passenger SUV, the Toyota Fortuner, and has invested an additional Ksh120 million in the Fortuner assembly line at the Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA) in Mombasa County.
The investment in the assembly line, which was commissioned by H.E. President Dr. William Ruto, includes the technological investment in the assembly jigs and fixtures, as well as the training and knowledge transfer that have made it possible to create 100 direct employment and 500 indirect jobs.
H.E President William Ruto was accompanied by numerous Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries as he opened the assembly factory in Miritini, Mombasa.
Aside from direct employment creation, CFAO Motors Kenya will collaborate closely with local component manufacturers to boost capacity and help them attain global standards through technology transfer and technical know-how.
Amb. Dennis Awori, chairman of CFAO Motors Kenya, said during the commissioning ceremony that the company expects excellent output levels from the assembly line due to a rising demand for passenger SUVs in the market. "With plans for a gradual increase in line with the National Automotive Policy and increasing market demand, we aim to construct 350 automobiles in our first year."
The Fortuner manufacturing line expands CFAO Motors Kenya's domestically built car inventory, especially following the recent merger with DT Dobie. The Land Cruiser LC79 series, Hino trucks and buses, Hilux single and double cab pickups, and Toyota Hiace (mini-bus) are now locally assembled by CFAO Motors at Associated Vehicle Assemblers, while Mercedes Benz trucks & buses, Hyundai trucks, and Volkswagen passenger cars are assembled by Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers in Thika.
By introducing the Fortuner CKD assembly line, CFAO Motors is demonstrating its continued support for the government's manufacturing programme and the "Buy Kenya Build Kenya" initiative. Because locally produced cars are exempt from duty, CFAO Motors will be able to sell the new Fortuner 2023 at a reasonable price when compared to completely imported large SUVs.
Arvinder Reel, Managing Director of CFAO Motors Kenya, praised the government's efforts to promote the expansion of the local manufacturing industry, pointing to the National Automotive Policy as a facilitator for the availability of more locally built cars in the nation.
